Global Call for Justice for Palestinian Journalists in Gaza

Journalist Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala was tragically murdered in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico, alongside his driver, Axel Yahir. Both were fatally shot while traveling in a vehicle in the Condado de la Pila neighborhood. Zavala, 28, was the founder and director of the Facebook-based news outlet El Silaoense MX, which covered local politics and public security. He had previously reported threats and had been under state protection since 2021.
This incident marks the third journalist killing in Mexico in 2025, underscoring the persistent dangers faced by media workers in the country. Despite being under the protection of the Federal Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, Zavala’s life was tragically cut short. His death raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of these protection measures.
In response, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have condemned the murder and called for a prompt and thorough investigation to ensure accountability. They emphasize that impunity for crimes against journalists must not be allowed to prevail.
The Mexican government, through the state governor and the State Attorney General’s Office, has pledged to investigate the incident, including examining whether Zavala’s journalistic work was a motive for the attack.
Zavala’s murder highlights the ongoing challenges to press freedom in Mexico, where journalists continue to face threats and violence. It underscores the urgent need for effective protection mechanisms and accountability to safeguard the rights of journalists and ensure the free flow of information.
