Gaza endured another wave of deadly bombardments as Israel intensified its attacks, leaving dozens dead and adding to the devastating toll on journalists. Among the casualties was Palestinian journalist Hassan Douhan, who was reporting in Khan Younis when he was killed by Israeli fire. Douhan worked for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, and his death marked the sixth journalist to be killed in a single day. His killing pushed the number of Palestinian journalists killed since October 2023 to 246, making Gaza the most dangerous place in the world for media workers.
The strike that killed Douhan came amid heavy bombardments across southern Gaza, including Khan Younis and Rafah. Eyewitnesses reported that several of the attacks followed a “double-tap” pattern, where initial strikes were quickly followed by secondary ones targeting those who rushed in to help, often including paramedics and members of the press. The Gaza Government Media Office condemned Israel’s actions as “systematic crimes against Gaza journalists,” calling on international human rights and media organizations to take urgent action to protect reporters.
Al Jazeera’s live coverage described the day as one of the most lethal for Gaza’s press corps since the war began, with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties and civilian neighborhoods reduced to rubble. While international outrage continues to mount after repeated strikes on hospitals and residential areas, the killing of Douhan underscores how perilously unsafe reporting from Gaza has become.
The rising toll reflects a deliberate pattern, critics say, aimed at silencing those documenting the war. Douhan’s death, coming alongside dozens of other civilian casualties that day, has reinforced calls for accountability and renewed demands for urgent international intervention to protect journalists.
In Gaza today, carrying a press badge has become one of the deadliest risks imaginable. Hassan Douhan’s death is not just a personal loss for his colleagues and community, but a painful reminder that journalism itself is under direct fire.
