The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has strongly condemned the recent attack on a journalist during an official event attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in Pipli. The journalist, a reporter from Dharitri newspaper, was reportedly assaulted by individuals linked to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while covering the Chief Minister’s public program.
According to local media reports, the attack occurred during a cultural segment of the event when the journalist was attempting to perform his reporting duties. Eyewitnesses stated that BJP supporters physically confronted him, obstructed his work, and subjected him to verbal and physical abuse. The incident sparked widespread criticism, especially from the BJD, which accused the BJP of fostering an increasingly hostile environment for media workers.
In an official statement, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty described the assault as “shameful” and “a direct attack on press freedom.” He questioned the BJP government’s commitment to democratic norms and called for immediate action against those involved. “Instead of protecting journalists, the current administration seems complicit in enabling such attacks. The freedom of the press is a foundational pillar of our democracy, and no government should tolerate violence against those who seek to inform the public,” Mohanty stated.
The BJD further alleged that the ruling party has consistently targeted dissenting voices and journalists critical of its policies. The party demanded a transparent investigation and the immediate arrest of those responsible. Opposition leaders have also urged the Chief Minister to personally ensure that justice is served and that protections for journalists are upheld in Odisha.
The Odisha Union of Journalists and other media bodies echoed the condemnation and expressed concern over the deteriorating safety of journalists in the state. They called for stronger legal safeguards and urged both state and central authorities to treat attacks on journalists as serious criminal offences.
