Photojournalist Adam Abu Harbid was killed in an Israeli helicopter strike near Al-Yarmouk market in Gaza City, as the total number of journalists killed in the region since October 7, 2023, to 232. According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, Harbid was sheltering with his family in a tent when the attack occurred. His wife and children were also injured in the strike.
Harbid’s death is part of a growing crisis for journalists in Gaza, who face not only the constant threat of bombardment but also extreme hunger and lack of medical care. Press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), describe the current conditions as the most lethal and suppressive for the press in modern history.
CPJ reports that the majority of the slain journalists—more than 178—were Palestinian. Many were killed alongside their families in homes, displacement shelters, or while reporting in the field. Media watchdogs have raised alarm over what they call targeted attacks and deliberate obstruction of the press.
Local and international media agencies continue to demand an end to these attacks and are calling for humanitarian access to Gaza, where journalists are working under life-threatening conditions with dwindling food, fuel, and medical resources. The killing of Adam Abu Harbid further underscores the deadly reality facing those committed to documenting the war.
His death adds to what is now being recognized as the deadliest conflict for journalists in recent memory, with calls mounting for independent investigations into violations of press protections under international law.
As the war continues, journalists like Harbid—armed only with cameras—remain among the most vulnerable, yet indispensable, in bringing the world’s attention to the realities on the ground in Gaza.
