Silenced voices: The treacherous reality for journalists in Iraq
May 4, 2025May 03, 2025 – Russia/Ukraine –
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukrainian journalists have been operating under increasingly perilous conditions. The war has not only claimed the lives of numerous media professionals but has also subjected many to detention, torture, and other forms of repression.
According to the International Federation of Journalists, at least 117 media workers have been killed since the onset of the conflict. Among them was Viktoria Roshchyna, a 27-year-old journalist who died in Russian captivity in 2024. Her body, returned to Ukraine in early 2025, bore signs of torture and was missing several organs, raising serious concerns about the circumstances of her death.
Beyond fatalities, journalists face daily threats to their safety. The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom reports that media professionals have been killed, injured, and subjected to targeted attacks aimed at silencing their voices. The destruction of media infrastructure, psychological trauma, and economic hardships further exacerbate the challenges faced by the Ukrainian media sector.
In response to these challenges, organizations like IREX have convened panels of media experts to discuss the immediate and long-term needs of Ukrainian journalists. These discussions emphasize the importance of adapting to conflict reporting, ensuring journalist safety, and providing support to those on the front lines and in occupied territories.
Despite the immense risks, Ukrainian journalists continue to report from the front lines, documenting the realities of war and providing critical information to both local and international audiences. Their resilience underscores the vital role of a free press, especially in times of conflict.
