Azerbaijan Faces International Calls to Release Detained Journalists and Activists
April 29, 2025April 29, 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
Israeli forces have intensified their clampdown on Palestinian journalists in the occupied West Bank, most recently arresting a prominent Palestinian journalist in the city of Nablus and blocking press access during a military operation.
On April 10, journalist Mohammad al-Khatib, a well-known reporter in the region, was arrested by Israeli forces during a raid in Nablus. Al-Khatib, who has covered numerous events in the West Bank over the years, was reportedly detained without charge, sparking concern among human rights groups and media watchdogs. His arrest marks yet another incident in a growing pattern of suppression of the Palestinian press.
During the same military operation west of Nablus, Israeli soldiers were filmed forcefully pushing journalists away from the scene, denying them access to report. Video footage shows several members of the press being aggressively moved aside as troops advanced, with no explanation offered for the obstruction. These actions prompted immediate condemnation from Palestinian media outlets, who labeled the move an infringement on press freedom and the public’s right to information.
The Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported that Israeli forces surrounded multiple neighborhoods in the area and launched extensive operations, during which they reportedly damaged property and detained several individuals, including journalists. Media crews attempting to cover the events were either denied entry or physically forced away, further escalating tensions between Israeli forces and the press community.
Palestinian journalist syndicates and advocacy organizations have called for al-Khatib’s immediate release and demanded international attention to the ongoing targeting of media professionals in the occupied territories. They argue that such arrests and media blackouts are attempts to silence narratives that highlight the realities of occupation and military aggression.
The continued obstruction of journalists in the West Bank has drawn criticism from global press freedom organizations, who warn that without accountability, these violations could become more frequent. With the situation in the region remaining volatile, journalists on the ground face increasing risks merely for doing their job—informing the public.
This incident adds to the growing body of evidence showing a troubling erosion of press freedoms in the Israeli-occupied territories.
