Afghan Journalists Face Escalating Repression on World Press Freedom Day 2025
May 4, 2025May 04, 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
On May 3, 2025, in the village of Al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, a group of armed Israeli settlers detained three Palestinian journalists—Mohamed Turkman, Karim Khmaisah, and Ahmed al-Khatib—and local activist Rabie Abu Naim. The group was documenting settler activities and the demolition of tents in the area when the settlers intercepted them, blocked their vehicle, attempted to seize their car keys and cellphone, and issued death threats should they return.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of increasing settler violence and harassment against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. On the same day, Israeli occupation forces conducted raids across the West Bank, including in Bethlehem, Jenin, and Tulkarem, resulting in the detention of several Palestinians and the injury of a 13-year-old boy in Jenin.
The targeting of journalists and activists by settlers and Israeli forces has raised significant concerns among human rights organizations and press freedom advocates. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reports that since the escalation of conflict in October 2023, numerous journalists have faced arrests, harassment, and violence, hindering their ability to report on the ground realities.
These developments underscore the urgent need for international attention to the safety and rights of journalists and activists operating in conflict zones, particularly in areas experiencing heightened tensions and violence.
