A recent report by Truthout reveals that the Israeli military publicly threatened Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif after he broadcast an emotional report on growing starvation in Gaza. In the viral footage, al-Sharif is visibly shaken as he documents a woman collapsing from hunger in the street. A voice off-camera urges him to continue, saying, “You are our voice.”
The Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, responded by accusing al-Sharif of spreading “crocodile tears” and implying he was affiliated with Hamas, without offering any evidence. The move was widely condemned as an attempt to discredit and intimidate a journalist for exposing the worsening humanitarian crisis.
Al-Sharif responded forcefully, warning on social media that the Israeli army was trying to silence reporters. He wrote, “The occupation army threatens me after publishing a video of the hunger and death scene in Gaza. This is an attempt to silence us and cover up the genocide.”
His report coincided with alarming figures from Gaza’s health authorities, who reported 19 starvation-related deaths in a single day. The footage showed people begging for bread and collapsing in the streets, while aid remains blocked or severely restricted.
The viral video, widely shared on social media and by Al Jazeera, has become a symbol of the growing desperation in Gaza, highlighting the crucial role that journalists like al-Sharif play in documenting conditions that would otherwise go unseen.
Human rights organisations have condemned the Israeli military’s targeting of journalists throughout the conflict, noting that this form of public shaming and threat undermines press freedom and endangers lives. With over 100 journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023, the region remains one of the deadliest places in the world for media workers.
