Israeli journalist Zvi Yehezkeli has provoked outrage after openly endorsing the killing of Palestinian journalists during a “double-tap” Israeli airstrike on Gaza’s Nasser Hospital. Speaking on i24 News, Yehezkeli portrayed the targeted media workers not as civilians or professionals but as legitimate targets, remarks widely condemned as an attack on journalism itself and a justification for war crimes.
His comments reflect a disturbing trend within segments of Israeli media, where the deaths of Palestinian journalists have been celebrated rather than mourned. An article in Haaretz titled “Better Late Than Never” framed the killings as a cause for approval, further underscoring how journalistic neutrality is being eroded in the face of nationalist and militarised narratives.
The airstrike killed Palestinian reporters covering conditions inside the hospital compound. Human rights groups and press freedom advocates have denounced the attack as a blatant violation of international law, stressing that journalists are civilians entitled to protection. The targeting of media workers, combined with public endorsements of their deaths by prominent Israeli figures, raises grave concerns about a systematic effort to silence Palestinian voices.
By framing Palestinian journalists as enemy combatants, Yehezkeli and his supporters normalize violence against those documenting the reality on the ground. Such rhetoric not only endangers journalists in Gaza but also undermines global standards of press freedom. For advocates of media rights, the incident highlights how dangerous it becomes when journalism itself is cast as a crime.
