Israeli journalist and far-left activist Israel Frey is under criminal investigation after he publicly celebrated the deaths of five Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers killed in Gaza. In a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 8, Frey declared, “The world is a better place this morning, without five young men who partook in one of the most brutal crimes against humanity.” His remarks, referencing the previous day’s casualties in Gaza, sparked a wave of outrage across the political spectrum and led to swift action from authorities.
Frey, 38, is a Haredi journalist known for his anti-establishment views, vocal criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza, and support for the Palestinian cause. In the same post, he called on Israeli mothers to resist sending their sons to fight, writing: “Do not be the next to receive your son in a coffin as a war criminal. Refuse.” Critics saw the comments as not only deeply insensitive but potentially inciting violence against Israeli soldiers.
Following public uproar, Israeli police—acting with approval from the Attorney General—launched a formal investigation into Frey on suspicion of incitement. The probe is being carried out by a special task force from the police’s Intelligence Division and the National Security Ministry, under directives from National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Police Commissioner Danny Levy.
The incident has reignited debate over the limits of free speech in Israel during wartime. While some defend Frey’s right to express dissenting opinions, others argue that his statements crossed a legal and moral line, especially as Israeli society reels from ongoing conflict and military losses. Even members of the political left, typically aligned with Frey on civil liberties and human rights, distanced themselves from the comments.
Frey’s case is part of a broader pattern of scrutiny and suppression of pro-Palestinian or anti-war expression in Israel since the Gaza conflict began. It underscores the growing tension between national security concerns and democratic freedoms, especially as the cost of war continues to rise on all sides. Whether Frey will be charged remains unclear, but the backlash signals a shrinking tolerance for wartime dissent.
