Hunted, Raped, Starved: Journalists Trapped Under Siege in El-Fasher

The life of Yahya Barzaq, a freelance photojournalist working with TRT, was cut short in an Israeli airstrike in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza. Barzaq, who had been covering the ongoing conflict with a focus on documenting the human toll, was reportedly in a café uploading his work when the strike hit. The attack killed him instantly, along with at least five other people nearby, while many more were wounded. The strike also damaged a carpentry workshop close to the blast site, further amplifying the devastation in a city already struggling under relentless bombardment.
Barzaq’s story is one of transformation and resilience. Before the war escalated, he was known as a newborn photographer, capturing moments of life and joy for families in Gaza. When the violence intensified, he shifted his lens toward documenting the destruction, displacement, and grief that defined everyday existence for Palestinians under siege. This transition from life-affirming photography to frontline journalism was driven by his conviction that the world needed to see the reality on the ground. His colleagues and media organizations described him as committed, courageous, and deeply dedicated to amplifying the voices of ordinary people caught in conflict.
The news of his death drew swift condemnation. TRT leadership decried the attack as part of a broader pattern of targeting journalists in Gaza and vowed to pursue accountability for those responsible. Press freedom groups also highlighted Barzaq’s killing as yet another example of the extreme risks faced by reporters in war zones, especially local freelancers who often have limited resources and protections but remain on the frontlines to bear witness.
Barzaq’s loss is not only personal to his family, colleagues, and community but also symbolic of the silencing of truth in Gaza. Each journalist killed represents the erasure of stories that might have reached the outside world. In Barzaq’s case, his death marks the transition of a man who once photographed new beginnings to someone who ultimately gave his life ensuring that endings were not ignored. His legacy endures as a reminder that journalism remains one of the most dangerous yet vital acts in times of war.
