Iraqi authorities have confirmed the death of photojournalist Wissam al-Ghanmi, who was found dead on July 28, 2025, several days after disappearing in Maysan Governorate, southeastern Iraq. Al-Ghanmi, who worked for multiple media outlets and was known for covering political unrest and social issues, had gone missing while reportedly on assignment. His disappearance triggered concern from local journalist unions and human rights groups, who feared for his safety amid a deteriorating environment for press freedom in Iraq.
The Maysan Police Directorate stated that al-Ghanmi’s body was discovered in a remote area near the city of Amarah. Security officials said they had launched an investigation, and initial findings suggested possible signs of violence, but no official cause of death has been released yet. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear, including whether al-Ghanmi was targeted for his work.
The Iraqi Journalists Syndicate expressed deep sorrow over the killing and demanded that the authorities conduct a transparent and urgent investigation. Local media professionals and rights advocates held vigils calling for accountability, fearing this could be yet another unresolved case in Iraq’s long history of violence against journalists. Iraq remains one of the most dangerous places for journalists, with decades of impunity for crimes against media workers. Many journalists have faced threats, kidnappings, or assassinations, often in connection with their reporting on corruption or armed groups.
Al-Ghanmi’s family and colleagues described him as a committed and courageous journalist who documented the difficult realities of his time, despite constant risks. His last assignments reportedly involved photographing politically sensitive protests, though officials have not confirmed whether these were linked to his death.
This incident adds to the growing number of press-related killings and disappearances in the region, especially in areas where state institutions remain weak and armed factions exercise influence. Press advocates have urged the international community to put pressure on the Iraqi government to protect journalists and end the cycle of impunity.
As Iraq mourns the loss of yet another media professional, calls for justice continue to mount. Al-Ghanmi’s death underscores the ongoing crisis facing journalists who dare to report the truth in hostile and politically fragile environments.
