Syrian Authorities Detain, Restrict Journalists in Aleppo After Military Gains

A widespread communications blackout imposed by the Iranian government has severely isolated journalists and citizens while protests spread across the country over economic distress and political discontent, press freedom advocates warn.
Since January 8, 2026, Iran has cut internet and telephone access nationwide amid demonstrations triggered by a collapsing currency, rising inflation, and broader dissatisfaction with the regime, making it difficult for journalists to report independently or share information with the outside world. RSF said the shutdown has blocked news websites, messaging apps, and international communications, leaving only state-affiliated channels operational, and documented recent intimidation and arrests of reporters covering the unrest. The group called for the restoration of communications and the release of detained journalists to uphold the public’s right to information.
The blackout has compounded the challenges journalists already face in an environment where independent media are tightly controlled and subject to arrests and censorship under existing press laws, further shrinking the space for critical reporting as the government seeks to suppress dissent and maintain control. The blackout also hinders documentation of alleged rights abuses during the protests, which continue despite official efforts to stifle coverage.
