Journalists working for Iran International, a London-based Persian‑language news outlet broadcasting globally, are living in fear as the Iranian regime intensifies intimidation campaigns against them—and even their families. Since the 12‑day conflict between Iran and Israel, threats have surged dramatically. About 45 journalists across eight countries and more than 300 of their relatives have reportedly received direct threats—some involving being followed, having trackers planted on their vehicles, and enduring harassing online abuse, including sexual harassment.
In Australia, Alireza Mohebbi, Iran International’s Melbourne correspondent, shared that regime agents have called his family, warning of dire consequences unless he ceases his work. Similarly, beyond Australia, others have faced surveillance, car tampering, and death threats.
This wave of threats has drawn condemnation from international voices. A group of UN human rights experts called the situation “an alarming escalation,” citing credible threats to 45 journalists and 315 family members. Many journalists have had to relocate, enter safe houses, or rely on police protection abroad.
Adding context, advocacy groups like the Committee to Protect Journalists point out that this pattern of repression extends broadly. Between mid‑July and early August, Iran had issued threats to 45 journalists and 315 relatives, demanding they stop working by specific deadlines, none of which were met by the regime.
