Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh, a former reporter for Radio Farda, has initiated a hunger strike in Tehran’s Evin Prison to protest the seizure of his essential documents, including his birth certificate. These documents are crucial for managing his legal affairs and protecting his assets abroad. Valizadeh, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of “collaborating with a hostile government,” began his hunger strike on June 7, 2025, following the confiscation of these vital records by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Intelligence Organization.
Valizadeh, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, returned to Iran in March 2024 after 14 years in exile. Upon his arrival, he was detained by agents of the IRGC and the Ministry of Intelligence. He was subsequently sentenced in expedited court sessions without a fair trial or access to legal representation. His appeal was denied, and the charges against him remain vague.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned Valizadeh’s detention and the ongoing denial of his essential documents. The CPJ has called for his immediate release and the return of his confiscated property.
Valizadeh’s hunger strike highlights the ongoing repression of journalists in Iran and the broader challenges faced by the press in the country. International human rights organizations continue to monitor the situation and advocate for the protection of journalists’ rights and freedoms.
