The International Press Institute (IPI), together with a coalition of press freedom and human rights organizations, has issued a strong appeal urging European Union member states to support concrete action in response to the killing of journalists in Gaza. The groups argue that the deaths of media workers constitute serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, and that the EU must not remain passive in the face of escalating impunity.
Central to the joint appeal is a demand that the EU suspend its Association Agreement with Israel and adopt targeted sanctions against those responsible for attacks on journalists. The statement also calls for independent access to Gaza for reporters, lifting restrictions that have effectively blocked coverage from inside the besieged territory. The organizations stress that ensuring the safety of journalists should be a priority, including the delivery of protective equipment, safe evacuation rights, and an immediate end to direct targeting of the press.
Another major focus of the appeal is the urgent need for credible investigations into the killings. IPI and its partners argue that impunity has become entrenched, leaving attacks on journalists unpunished and further undermining accountability. They emphasize that justice for media workers is essential not only for press freedom but also for the broader protection of civilians in conflict zones.
The statement reflects growing frustration among media and rights advocates who say that the EU has failed to take decisive measures despite the alarming number of journalist deaths in Gaza. Since the start of the war, hundreds of Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed, making the enclave one of the deadliest places in the world for the press. The organizations warn that continued inaction by European governments risks signaling tolerance for ongoing violations against journalists and freedom of expression.
By issuing this joint call, IPI and its partners aim to pressure EU states to go beyond expressions of concern and move toward meaningful accountability. Their message is clear: only through strong, coordinated action can Europe help end the cycle of impunity and ensure that journalists are protected rather than silenced.
