On September 19, 2024, Palestinian journalist Mujahed al-Saadi was forcibly arrested by Israeli forces during a pre-dawn raid on his home in Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank. The operation was marked by violence, with reports indicating that al-Saadi and his wife were physically assaulted during the arrest. Al-Saadi was taken barefoot and in his sleepwear, and his mobile phones were confiscated by the soldiers.
Al-Saadi, a freelance journalist contributing to outlets such as Al-Araby al-Jadeed and Palestine Today TV, has a history of reporting on Israeli military activities in the region. Notably, he was shot in the leg by Israeli forces in August 2024 while covering an Israeli assault on Jenin. He has also survived two prior assassination attempts, underscoring the risks he faces in his profession.
Following his arrest, al-Saadi was placed in administrative detention at Megiddo prison, a facility known for its harsh conditions. Under Israel’s administrative detention policy, individuals can be held for extended periods without formal charges or trial, based on undisclosed evidence. This practice has been widely criticized by human rights organizations for its lack of transparency and potential for abuse.
Al-Saadi’s detention is part of a broader pattern of Israeli actions against Palestinian journalists. Since October 2023, the Committee to Protect Journalists has documented the arrest of at least 54 journalists in the West Bank, with 36 still in custody, many under administrative detention.
The targeting of journalists like al-Saadi raises serious concerns about press freedom and the safety of media professionals in conflict zones. International organizations continue to call for the protection of journalists and adherence to international legal standards regarding freedom of the press.
