The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has condemned an Israeli airstrike that killed at least nine journalists in Yemen, calling it a “grave violation of international law.” The strike on 10 September hit Sana’a and the northern province of Al Jawf, damaging the offices of the 26 September Newspaper, a media outlet under Houthi control.
The fatalities include Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, Abbas Al-Dailami, Youssef Shams Al-Din Al-Bahri, Mohammed Al-Omeisi, Abdullah Al-Harazi, Murad Halboub Al-Faqih, Ali Naji Al-Shara’i, Ali Mohammed Al-Aqel, and Jamal Al-Adhi. Several others were wounded, among them Mansour Al-Ansi.
Yemeni sources report that 35 people were killed overall and 131 wounded in the strike, which also hit civilians nearby. Although 26 September is linked to the Yemeni Army, both the IFJ and the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) stressed that many of those killed were civilian reporters with no military role.
IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger strongly denounced the attack, stating: “Targeting journalists is a grave violation of international law and an attack on the public’s right to know.” The IFJ and YJS have demanded an independent, transparent investigation into the incident.
The Israeli Defence Forces defended the strike, saying it targeted “military infrastructure belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime,” including military camps, fuel storage sites, and the Houthi Public Relations Department.
This latest attack has heightened international concerns about the safety of journalists working in conflict zones. Press freedom advocates warn that the repeated targeting of reporters undermines global media coverage and erodes the public’s right to independent information during times of war.
