Yemeni Journalist Mohammed Al-Maqri Executed by Al-Qaeda After Nine Years of Captivity

A Palestinian journalist and poet, Mohammad Hijazi, was killed by an Israeli airstrike in the Jabalia refugee camp, northern Gaza, according to his family and Gaza’s Health Ministry. This tragic event brings the total death toll of journalists and media workers killed by Israeli forces since October 7, 2023, to approximately 220.
This powerful declaration has now become both a haunting epitaph and a rallying cry against the targeting of journalists in Gaza.
The latest Al Jazeera report, titled “I refuse a cheap death”, notes Hijazi was among nearly 90 Palestinians killed in the Jabalia camp during a single 24-hour span amid escalating Israeli military operations. These strikes have drawn widespread condemnation, as they reportedly not only target fighters but also civilians and media professionals working to document the conflict.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has highlighted this single conflict as “unprecedented” for media worker casualties—85 journalists killed in 2024 alone, making it the deadliest year on record. CPJ has also criticized Israel’s tendency to shift blame onto the journalists killed and for resisting thorough investigations or accountability.
Al Jazeera and other rights groups argue that such killings are part of a broader strategy of press repression, where journalists are killed despite being identified. They warn that without justice and accountability, press freedom in zones of conflict will continue to disintegrate.
