Haiti’s media landscape came under severe assault as armed gangs launched coordinated attacks on prominent news outlets in Port-au-Prince. The Viv Ansanm gang coalition targeted Radio Télévision Caraïbes (RTVC), Radio Mélodie FM, and Télé Pluriel, setting their facilities ablaze and looting equipment. These attacks are part of a broader strategy to silence independent journalism and instill fear among media professionals.
The violence forced many journalists to flee their homes and workplaces, seeking safety amid escalating threats. Jean-Jacques Asperges, a veteran radio journalist, was displaced twice due to gang violence and now resides in a crowded shelter with his family. Despite these hardships, many journalists continue to report on the crisis, demonstrating resilience in the face of danger.
International organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, have condemned the attacks and called for urgent measures to protect press freedom in Haiti. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) highlighted that these assaults aim to intimidate journalists and disrupt the flow of information, further destabilizing the country.
The Haitian government, struggling to contain gang violence, has pledged to enhance security measures for media institutions. However, with gangs controlling an estimated 85% of Port-au-Prince, the effectiveness of these efforts remains uncertain.
The attacks on media outlets underscore the perilous conditions under which Haitian journalists operate. As the country grapples with political instability and rampant gang violence, safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists are critical to restoring order and democracy.
