Media organizations worldwide are gearing up for a coordinated blackout on September 1, staging a powerful and unified protest over the growing number of journalists killed in Gaza and the restrictions on press access. The campaign calls on outlets globally to shutter their front pages, websites, and broadcasts in solidarity.
This media blackout is being organized by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Avaaz, and the International Federation of Journalists, with support from a broad coalition of outlets including Al Jazeera, The Independent, +972, Local Call, The Intercept, Mediapart, L’Humanité, Forbidden Stories, il Fatto Quotidiano, El País, RTVE, Daraj, Mada Masr, Le Desk, and L’Orient-Le Jour. In total, around 150 media organizations across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia are expected to participate.
The blackout is a response to the mounting death toll among journalists in Gaza—over 210 journalists have died since October 7, 2023—and the continuing exclusion of foreign reporters from entering the enclave.
A recent and especially devastating trigger was the August 25 airstrike on Nasser Hospital, which killed at least 20 individuals, including five journalists from Reuters, AP, and Al Jazeera, in what has been described as a “double-tap” strike that hit rescuers arriving on the scene. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later referred to the incident as a “tragic mishap,” launching an internal inquiry and asserting that their intended target was a Hamas-operated surveillance camera near the site.
