Journalists in Gaza are facing a devastating hunger crisis as ongoing Israeli restrictions block access to essential supplies. These journalists are among the last remaining witnesses to the war, but their ability to report is collapsing under the weight of extreme malnutrition and isolation.
Leading news agencies, including the Associated Press, AFP, Reuters, and the BBC, released a joint statement warning that journalists in Gaza are now collapsing from hunger. They reported that local reporters are forced to trade protective gear for food, with some unable to continue their work due to sheer physical weakness. “Journalists endure many deprivations. We are deeply alarmed that the threat of starvation is now one of them,” the statement read.
The International Federation of Journalists condemned Israel for allegedly using starvation as a weapon against the press, calling it a deliberate attempt to silence those who document the reality on the ground. The group called on international governments and human rights organizations to demand that Israel allow food and fuel deliveries and permit foreign journalists to access the region.
The International Press Institute added that without urgent global intervention, journalists will continue to die silently, and the world will be left blind to what is happening in Gaza. They called for immediate humanitarian aid and diplomatic pressure on Israel to comply with international law.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has warned that reporters in Gaza are under dual threats of starvation and violence. Some journalists have been accused without evidence of being affiliated with militant groups, placing their lives at greater risk.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly. According to health organizations, over one hundred people have died from starvation in recent days. Médecins Sans Frontières has reported a sharp rise in malnutrition among children under five. Food insecurity now affects over a third of Gaza’s population.
The international community is being urged to act immediately. Without the survival of Gaza’s journalists, there will be no one left to report the truth. Their suffering represents not only a humanitarian tragedy but also a direct assault on press freedom.
