A Ghanaian journalist has been awarded one of Africa’s most respected science journalism prizes, earning continental recognition for investigative reporting that shed light on the environmental and social impacts of coastal erosion in Ghana.
Ibrahim Khalilulahi Usman, an environmental journalist, received the Africa Science Journalism Award for his in-depth investigation into how climate change, rising sea levels, and human activity are accelerating coastal erosion and threatening livelihoods along Ghana’s coastline. The award celebrates excellence in science reporting that translates complex research into accessible, public-interest journalism with real-world impact.
Usman’s winning work focused on vulnerable coastal communities facing the loss of homes, farmland, and cultural heritage as shorelines steadily retreat. His reporting combined scientific data, expert analysis, and firsthand accounts from affected residents, illustrating how environmental degradation intersects with poverty, displacement, and policy gaps. Judges praised the investigation for grounding scientific findings in human experience while maintaining rigorous accuracy.
The Africa Science Journalism Award is regarded as a leading platform for recognizing journalists who elevate science, health, and environmental issues across the continent. Award organizers said Usman’s reporting stood out for its clarity, depth, and public relevance, particularly at a time when African countries are grappling with the growing consequences of climate change.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Usman dedicated the award to communities living on the frontlines of environmental change. He emphasized the role of journalism in amplifying marginalized voices and holding decision-makers accountable for environmental protection and climate adaptation policies. He also highlighted the importance of sustained investment in science journalism to ensure that critical research informs public debate.
Media organizations and colleagues in Ghana welcomed the recognition, describing it as a milestone for environmental journalism in the country. They noted that science reporting often receives limited resources despite its importance for public awareness and policy development, and said the award demonstrates the impact such reporting can achieve.
The recognition places Ghanaian journalism on the continental stage and underscores the growing importance of science-based reporting in Africa. As climate risks intensify across the region, journalists like Usman play a crucial role in translating scientific evidence into stories that inform communities, influence policy, and contribute to more sustainable and equitable responses.
The award also serves as a reminder that strong, independent journalism remains essential to addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges — from environmental degradation to public health — by connecting science, society, and accountability.
