Two German journalists from Deutsche Welle (DW) were violently attacked by Israeli settlers on July 2, 2025, while reporting on settler violence in the Palestinian village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The journalists—a reporter and a cameraman—were covering a demonstration organized by local Palestinians to protest recent settler attacks when a group of settlers approached and began throwing stones at them. The journalists, clearly identifiable as press, were forced to flee on foot as the settlers continued hurling rocks and chasing them. Their vehicle, marked as a press car, was later found badly damaged.
The attack drew strong condemnation from DW and German journalist unions. Deutsche Welle Director General Peter Limbourg denounced the violence, calling it “a deliberate attack on press freedom.” He emphasized that DW expects Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and guarantee the safety of journalists operating in the region. The German Journalists’ Association (DJV) also expressed outrage, warning that journalists are increasingly being hunted down with impunity and that this incident must not go unpunished.
Germany’s ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert, voiced concern over the assault, stating that freedom of the press and journalist safety must be protected at all times. The attack is part of a broader, troubling trend of threats and violence against journalists in the occupied Palestinian territories. Both local and international media workers have increasingly faced harassment, physical attacks, and restrictions from both settlers and Israeli forces.
This is not the first time journalists have been targeted in the West Bank, but the assault on foreign media workers has further heightened international scrutiny. Rights groups and press freedom advocates warn that the environment for journalists in the region is becoming increasingly dangerous, with perpetrators rarely held accountable.
The attack on DW journalists underscores the urgent need for stronger protections and accountability mechanisms. It also raises serious concerns about press freedom and the ability of the media to safely report on human rights abuses in conflict zones like the West Bank.
