A 25-year-old German journalist and activist, Anna Liedtke, has publicly accused Israeli forces of rape and systematic abuse during her detention following the interception of the Freedom Coalition Flotilla in international waters in 2025. Liedtke, who was aboard the humanitarian vessel Conscience attempting to reach the Gaza Strip, said she was held by Israeli authorities for five days and subjected to sexual violence amid prison transfers.
According to her first public testimony since the incident, Liedtke was abducted when Israeli forces intercepted the Gaza-bound aid ship, roughly 100 nautical miles off the coast. She stated the alleged sexual assault occurred during strip searches while being transferred between detention facilities, describing the act not as an isolated event but as part of a broader pattern of abuse. Liedtke said she chose to speak out “on behalf of Palestinian men and women who have experienced sexual violence and torture in prisons,” emphasising solidarity with detainees she said endured similar mistreatment.
Liedtke’s account highlights the extreme risks faced by journalists and activists in conflict settings, particularly those challenging blockades and humanitarian restrictions. She detailed conditions of confinement and repeated transfers that, she alleged, facilitated abusive conduct by authorities. Liedtke’s statement has also cited testimony from other detainees — especially women — who claim they faced sexual abuse while in custody. She underscored that perpetrators, not victims, should bear the shame for such acts.
Her allegations have ignited fresh debate over the treatment of international activists and journalists by security forces during and after maritime interdictions. Human rights and prisoner advocacy groups have long criticised conditions in Israel’s detention system, with past reports documenting physical, psychological, and sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees and other prisoners. Critics argue that these practices violate international legal standards governing the humane treatment of detainees and press freedom protections.
Israeli authorities have not publicly responded to Liedtke’s specific allegations, and independent verification of her claims remains limited. The case arrives amid broader scrutiny of Israeli interception of aid flotillas — including other reported abuses of activists and ongoing legal and political disputes over the Gaza naval blockade. Observers note that unresolved allegations of mistreatment continue to fuel international criticism and calls for a transparent investigation into detention practices involving journalists and humanitarian actors.
