Despite the devastation of war, dreadful shortages of food and ongoing violence, journalists in the Gaza Strip continue to report under some of the most harrowing conditions. Outlets such as Committee to Protect Journalists and local media groups describe these reporters as working without adequate rest, nutrition or safety—surviving on almost nothing, carrying on with their mission to tell Gaza’s story.
The impact of starvation and trauma has deeply affected the press corps. Newsrooms have been destroyed, equipment lost, and movement severely restricted by the blockade and shifting front-lines. Notably, one colleague was killed days after a cease-fire in Gaza City, underlining how even pauses in open conflict offer no respite for media workers.
Journalists say they have been reduced to basic survival: in some cases selling their gear just to buy food, filming through hunger and illness, and reporting while their communities are under bombardment. Their work has become both documentation and defiance—proof that Gaza remains inhabited and resisting erasure.
Yet the risk is enormous. The collapse of civilian infrastructure means many media workers are exposed to the same threats as civilians, including air-strikes, sniper fire, starvation, and the physical and mental toll of constant crisis. In one example, a colleague was fatally shot while reporting during what was described as cross-border fighting.
Despite this, journalists in Gaza persist. They continue to report from destroyed buildings, through blackouts, and with minimal supplies—making sure stories of suffering, survival and resilience reach the world. Their work is vital in giving voice to those who would otherwise be silenced.
In short, the journalists of Gaza are working under hunger, trauma and danger—not just as chroniclers of conflict, but as part of the story themselves. Their commitment ensures the world does not turn its back on Gaza’s civilians, even as their equipment, resources and safety diminish.
