Wael Al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief, has publicly decried what he calls the world’s “indifference” in response to the suffering in Gaza, particularly after a series of airstrikes killed multiple members of his own family.
In October 2023, a strike on Nuseirat refugee camp claimed the lives of his wife Amna, his 15-year-old son Mahmoud, and his 7-year-old daughter, Sham. His grandson Adam also perished in that attack. Weeks later, in January 2024, his eldest son Hamza, a journalist himself, was killed in another strike in southern Gaza.
Al-Dahdouh has criticised how media outlets cover the Israel-Hamas conflict, saying many reports fall short of “norms and standards of journalism.” He alleges that international response has been passive, allowing large-scale loss of civilian life, including among journalists, to fade without adequate accountability or public pressure.
He reflected on the personal impact of these losses, saying: “Why should I lose my wife, my lifelong friend, and partner, my son, my daughter?” He emphasised that both Mahmoud, who had hoped to follow in his father’s footsteps as a journalist, and Hamza, who was already working as one, were killed merely for living and reporting in Gaza.
The comments come amid broader concerns over safety risks for journalists in conflict zones, civilian protection under international law, and media ethics when reporting on war. Al-Dahdouh’s experience is a stark reminder that behind every statistic is a human story and often, a deep sacrifice.
