Marine Vlahovic, a prominent French journalist and pro-Palestinian documentarian, was found dead in late November 2024 on the rooftop terrace of her Marseille apartment. The 39-year-old journalist, known for her outspoken reporting on Palestine and her solidarity with Gaza’s people, had become a respected voice in European media for her coverage of the Middle East. Her sudden and unexplained death has sparked urgent calls from press freedom groups for a full, transparent investigation.
Vlahovic had a long history of reporting from conflict zones, including a notable three-year period based in Ramallah, from 2016 to 2019. Her work featured in respected outlets such as RFI, Radio France, Le Soir, ARTE Radio, and National Geographic. Most recently, she produced the audio documentary Gaza Calling, released in October 2024, which focused on the devastating Israeli attacks on Gaza and highlighted the voices of Palestinian victims and survivors. Friends say she had received hostile messages online due to her reporting and political views, particularly her criticism of the Israeli government’s actions during the war.
Reports differ slightly, with some stating her body was found on November 25 and others citing November 27. Friends raised the alarm after she failed to respond to messages, prompting a visit to her home. Police found her body on the rooftop terrace, with no immediate signs of foul play, though toxicology results are still pending. Authorities have not confirmed any cause of death, and the investigation remains open.
Her death has triggered grief and suspicion among colleagues, media watchdogs, and human rights groups. Women in Journalism called for a “transparent and independent inquiry,” warning that dismissing potential motives linked to her reporting would be premature. She is one of 24 women journalists reported to have died globally in 2024, underscoring the rising risks to women in the profession.
Vlahovic’s passing is a loss to investigative journalism and to the Palestinian voices she sought to elevate. Her final work gave voice to the silenced—now, advocates demand the same level of justice and truth for her.
