African Journalists Demand Answers on Missing Guinean Reporter
June 5, 2025June 05, 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
On June 4, 2025, an Israeli unmanned aerial strike targeted the courtyard of the Al‑Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, where a group of journalists had gathered. The attack resulted in the deaths of four media workers—Ismail Baddah, Suleiman Hajjaj, Samir Al‑Rifai, and Ahmad Qalja (who later succumbed to injuries)—while Imad Daloul was critically wounded.
Eyewitnesses and hospital staff, including hospital director Dr. Fadel Naeem, confirmed the strike hit journalists at their makeshift reporting site. Daloul and Qalja were rushed into intensive care.
Local and international press freedom monitors noted that this is the eighth attack on Al‑Ahli Hospital since the conflict began in October 2023, highlighting an alarming and escalating targeting of medical and journalistic spaces.
Middle East Eye described the incident as a deliberate strike on media workers inside the hospital courtyard. Palestinian resistance groups quickly condemned the strike as a war crime, stating it “assassinated journalists protected under the Geneva Conventions.”
This attack brings the total number of Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza since the current phase of the conflict began on October 7, 2023, to at least 224–226, according to statistics from the Palestinian Journalists Protection Committee and international human rights organizations. Many analysts have described Gaza as the most dangerous place in the world for journalists, with fatalities occurring at an average rate of one every three to four days.
The incident underscores the growing peril facing journalists in Gaza, where medical facilities, media offices, and reporting sites have repeatedly been struck. Human rights advocates and press associations have called for urgent international investigation and accountability, warning that these attacks deliberately silence critical reporting and obstruct the flow of life-saving information.
