Calls for Justice Intensify After Nepali Journalists’ Deaths

Nepal’s press freedom is under scrutiny following the deaths of two journalists—Suresh Rajak and Suresh Bhul—in separate incidents, with investigations into both cases facing significant delays.

On March 28, 2025, Avenues Television cameraman Suresh Rajak was killed while covering a pro-monarchy protest in Kathmandu. Trapped inside a building set ablaze by demonstrators, Rajak was unable to escape as protestors reportedly hindered rescue efforts by pelting stones at firefighters. The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) condemned the incident as a targeted attack on press freedom and has demanded a high-level, impartial investigation. FNJ Vice President Umid Bagchand led a delegation that submitted a memorandum to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), calling for a thorough probe into the incident.

In November 2024, investigative journalist Suresh Bhul was lynched by a mob in Dhangadhi. While initial reports cited cattle theft as the motive, subsequent investigations revealed that Bhul had received threats from local political figures due to his investigative work and activism for the right to information. Despite these revelations, no arrests have been made in connection with his death.

International organizations, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), have expressed concern over the slow progress of investigations into both cases. RSF has urged Nepalese authorities to expedite inquiries, warning that ongoing impunity threatens journalists’ safety and the public’s right to information.

The FNJ has also organized nationwide protests and submitted memoranda to government officials, demanding justice for the deceased journalists and immediate relief for their families. NHRC Chairperson Top Bahadur Magar has pledged the commission’s full support in uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for journalist Rajak.

These incidents underscore the increasing risks faced by journalists in Nepal and highlight the urgent need for comprehensive measures to protect press freedom and ensure accountability for crimes against media personnel.
