The Al Jazeera Media Institute offers a dedicated Fellowship programme designed to foster high-calibre research and professional development within journalism. Hosted under the umbrella of Al Jazeera Media Network (AJMN), the initiative aims to equip mid-career journalists and scholars with hands-on experience in newsroom practices while delivering original academic work on media and journalism themes. The Fellowship is structured in two phases: a remote preparation phase where fellows submit a research plan and introduction, followed by an on-site phase based at AJMN headquarters, culminating in a 7,000-word research paper. Eligibility stipulates a bachelor’s degree, a minimum of four years’ experience in journalism or research, strong proficiency in academic English, and fluency in English (with separate tracks available in Arabic for native Arabic-speakers). Applicants must provide a curriculum vitae, a detailed proposal (1,000-1,500 words) outlining objectives, methodology and relevance to journalism, three work samples in English, and two letters of recommendation.
The Institute encourages proposals within five thematic streams: Journalism and the Global South (exploring non-Western frameworks and the impact of colonial legacies on media), Digital Journalism (covering evolving storytelling formats, fact-checking, data journalism and AI integration), New Schools in Journalism (including slow journalism, photo-documentary and anthropological approaches), Journalism Ethics (focusing on modern challenges such as hate speech and platform responsibilities), and Media Institutions and Challenges (examining business models, digital transformation and newsroom evolution in the Global South).
Selection is managed by a review committee that evaluates fit with the Institute’s objectives and the quality of the research proposal. The application window for the English-language track for 2025 opens on 4 November and closes on 4 December. Freelancer and employed journalists are welcome to apply so long as they meet all criteria; late or incomplete applications are not accepted. Fellows are expected to be active contributors within the AJMN environment and submit monthly status reports through to the final submission. This opportunity offers the chance to engage directly with AJMN’s editorial teams, gain internal exposure to a global media operation, and produce research that contributes meaningfully to contemporary journalistic practice and media scholarship.
