A U.S. federal judge has ordered immigration authorities to explain the legal basis for the detention of a Nashville journalist, intensifying scrutiny over the arrest and raising broader concerns about press freedom and immigration enforcement.
The case involves Estefany Rodríguez Florez, a Colombian journalist and reporter for the Spanish-language outlet Nashville Noticias, who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in early March 2026. According to court filings, Rodríguez was arrested while sitting in a vehicle with her husband in Nashville and taken to an immigration detention facility.
Her attorneys quickly filed an emergency petition in federal court, arguing that the detention was unlawful and requesting her immediate release. The legal filing stated that immigration agents did not present a valid arrest warrant at the time of her detention and argued that she had been complying with immigration procedures related to her asylum case.
In response, U.S. District Judge Eli Richardson ordered the federal government to submit a written explanation justifying the arrest and continued detention. The judge set a deadline requiring immigration authorities to provide the legal basis for the action and clarify whether proper procedures were followed.
Rodríguez has lived in the United States for several years after entering the country legally and later applying for political asylum. She also holds a work permit and had been scheduled to attend a meeting with immigration officials later in March regarding her immigration status.
Her arrest has drawn widespread attention in Nashville and beyond, particularly because her reporting has frequently focused on immigration enforcement and issues affecting immigrant communities. Supporters, journalists, and community members have organized advocacy campaigns and public calls for her release while the legal proceedings continue.
Advocates argue that the detention raises serious questions about the treatment of journalists and asylum seekers in the United States. Legal experts say the court’s request for justification reflects concerns about whether immigration authorities followed proper legal procedures and respected constitutional protections.
The judge’s order requires the federal government to clarify its position before the court determines the next steps in the case. The outcome could influence whether Rodríguez remains in detention while her immigration proceedings continue or is released pending further legal review.
Press freedom advocates say the case highlights the potential impact of immigration enforcement actions on journalists reporting on sensitive political issues, particularly when those reporters belong to immigrant communities themselves.
