Family members of Lebanese journalist Mohammad Faraj, who has been held in Jordanian custody since December 2025, have publicly expressed deep concern for his health and safety, urging authorities to provide clarity on his condition and treatment amid continued uncertainty over the reasons for his detention. Faraj, a presenter and documentary producer with the Al-Mayadeen news network, was stopped by Jordanian officials upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman from Beirut and has remained in detention without formal charges or a transparent legal process.
Relatives of Faraj have described a distressing lack of information regarding his well-being, noting that they have not been given access to visit him, nor have they received official updates on his physical condition or the specific allegations leading to his indefinite detention. Sources close to the family say Faraj has experienced health issues since his arrest, including stress-related symptoms, and that the absence of confirmed details about his medical care has exacerbated the family’s anxiety. They have appealed to both Jordanian authorities and international rights bodies to intervene and ensure that he receives necessary treatment and legal representation.
Faraj’s arrest in late December followed his routine return to Amman from Lebanon with his wife, Al-Mayadeen journalist Rana Abi Jumaa, who was released shortly after questioning. Faraj, however, was taken into custody and has since remained in detention amid conflicting reports about official justifications. The lack of a public charge or court hearing has provoked criticism from media freedom advocates who argue that prolonged, unexplained detention undermines basic legal rights and due process. They contend that Faraj’s work as a journalist should not subject him to arbitrary state action.
Press rights groups and regional media observers have echoed the family’s call for greater transparency and respect for international norms protecting journalists. They emphasise that colleagues and relatives must be granted access to Faraj, that any health concerns be treated with urgency, and that Jordanian authorities clarify the legal basis for his detention. The case has drawn heightened attention amid concerns about the treatment of foreign journalists and media figures operating in or travelling through the region.
Faraj’s family insists that the absence of public charges and limited communication violates his right to a fair and transparent legal process, and they continue to urge both Jordan and international actors to ensure his immediate release or transfer to appropriate medical care if needed
