Four Women Journalists Win 2025 Cabot Prizes for Courageous Reporting Across the Americas
July 30, 2025The Journalists’ Charity officially launched the Wales Media Awards 2025 on 18 July 2025, inviting news organizations, freelancers, student reporters, photographers, audio teams, and digital storytellers from across Wales to submit high‑quality journalism produced between June 1, 2024, and May 31, 2025.
This annual awards program celebrates outstanding journalistic excellence in English and Welsh, across categories including News Writer, Political Journalist, Podcast of the Year, Community Journalism, and Outstanding Contribution to Journalism. Last year’s awards took place on 15 November 2024 at Cardiff’s Parkgate Hotel.
The Wales Media Awards not only honor journalism but also serve as a key fundraiser for the Journalists’ Charity, which provides support, grants, and welfare services to working and retired journalists in need. The 2023 ceremony raised more than £9,000 from ticket sales, sponsorships, and donations.
Judging is conducted by a panel of respected journalists from both Wales and across the UK. The awards reward integrity, investigative rigor, storytelling quality, public interest value, and professionalism. Last year, notable winners included David Hurn for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism, and Martin Shipton (Nation Cymru) as Political Journalist of the Year and overall Journalist of the Year. Cian Tookey, a Cardiff Met graduate, was named Student Journalist of the Year.
With entries already open for 2025, finalists are expected to be announced in the fall, followed by a gala dinner in Cardiff where winners will be crowned in November. The awards ceremony typically attracts around 200 guests from media, academia, and regional stakeholders.
