Strengthening Police Role to Safeguard Journalists in Albania
June 25, 2025The Women in Media 2025 conference, held in Suva, Fiji, brought together female journalists from across the Pacific region to address ongoing challenges and advocate for meaningful reforms in the media industry. The gathering served as a crucial platform for discussing gender equality, safety, representation, and the unique obstacles women face while working in media throughout the Pacific.
Journalists, editors, media leaders, and advocates shared personal experiences, research findings, and collective strategies aimed at breaking down systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress in the field. Participants emphasized the need to ensure that women not only occupy newsroom positions but also hold leadership roles where they can influence content, policies, and organizational cultures.
One of the central themes of the conference was the continued underrepresentation of women in senior editorial roles and decision-making positions, despite the growing number of women entering the profession. Delegates also highlighted the disproportionate risks women face, including harassment, threats, and online abuse, which often discourage them from pursuing certain stories or advancing in their careers.
Safety concerns, particularly for female journalists covering politics, crime, and sensitive social issues, were discussed extensively. Many participants called for stronger institutional support systems, better legal protections, and more comprehensive workplace policies to ensure the safety and well-being of women in journalism.
In addition to addressing challenges, the conference celebrated the resilience, creativity, and achievements of Pacific women in media, showcasing successful leadership stories and groundbreaking journalism produced by women across the region. Networking sessions and workshops allowed participants to build stronger regional alliances and share best practices for promoting gender equity within their organizations.
The Women in Media 2025 conference concluded with a strong call to action: Pacific media organizations must commit to fostering inclusive environments where women journalists can thrive, lead, and report without fear. The collaborative energy and shared vision from the event reflect growing momentum to drive cultural change and strengthen the role of women as powerful voices in the Pacific’s evolving media landscape.
