CPJ Announces 2025 International Press Freedom Awards Honorees
September 12, 2025At the 2025 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention, several New York Times journalists and leaders were recognised for their outstanding contributions to journalism and diversity.
Cheriss May, a renowned photographer, received the Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award for her decades of impactful visual storytelling. Caryn A. Wilson, director of culture and community at The Times, was honoured with the Ida B. Wells Award for her leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in media.
The Times also earned the Best Practices Award, reflecting its dedication to building equitable newsroom structures. The Community Service Award was presented to The Times for its outreach initiatives and its work in engaging with underserved communities. These institutional awards highlight The Times’ broader commitment to creating pathways for underrepresented voices in journalism.
The recognitions given to May and Wilson, alongside the organisational awards, underscore how individual excellence and institutional responsibility together strengthen the profession. Their work demonstrates the power of journalism to broaden representation and to ensure that marginalized perspectives are seen and heard.
