Standing for Press Freedom: An Invitation to the Doha Conference
October 7, 2025Get ready for a critical two-day forum hosted by Medill and the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs on October 23–24, 2025, in Evanston, Illinois.
The event opens Thursday, October 23, at 5:30 pm with a keynote address by Wendy McMahon, former president of CBS News. A reception and the presentation of the James Foley-Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism will follow.
On Friday, October 24, starting around 9:00 am, two in-depth panel discussions will spotlight key challenges facing journalists today: digital and physical threats in one session, and legal, financial, and institutional pressures in another. Confirmed panelists include Julie Pace (AP Executive Editor), Roberson Alphonse (Haiti), April Xu, Adam Ganucheau, Tenzin Pema, and Chris Casquejo. Lunch will be provided.
This forum is free and open to all, but registration is required. The venue is Guild Lounge, Scott Hall, 601 University Place, Evanston, IL.
Journalists worldwide face mounting dangers: censorship, harassment, digital surveillance, financial constraints, and physical injury. As Medill Dean Charles Whitaker notes, this event aims “to shine light on these obstacles and also explore what we all can do to overcome” them.
