September 9, 2025Journalism is rapidly evolving, reshaped by technology, fluid newsroom structures, and shifting audience habits, creating both uncertainty and opportunity. To help media professionals navigate this changing landscape, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is offering a free online course titled “Explore Your Career River: Navigate Change in Today’s Media Ecosystem,” running from October 6 to November 2, 2025.
This accessible, fully asynchronous course—requiring no prior training—is open to journalists, freelancers, editors, media designers, product professionals, and executives worldwide. Guided by veteran journalist Bridget Thoreson, founder of MyCareerRiver.com and Hearken’s Chief Project Officer, participants will apply the Career River framework to envision their professional lives not as rigid ladders but as dynamic, flowing paths shaped by goals, connections, and opportunities.

- Discover the Career River mindset, embracing flexibility over linear progression.
- Reflect on fulfillment by moving beyond traditional career models.
- Map their journey to trace transferable skills and pivotal moments.
- Craft compelling narratives that adapt to diverse contexts.
- Strategize their next steps—whether advancing internally or pivoting to new roles.
