The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) has been instrumental in the ongoing efforts to locate and identify individuals who went missing during and after the 1998–1999 Kosovo conflict. As of recent reports, approximately 1,600 individuals remain unaccounted for, including several journalists.
Among the missing are Serbian journalists such as Đuro Slavuj and Ranko Perenić, who disappeared in 1999 while traveling to cover a report in western Kosovo. Despite extensive searches, their fates remain unknown.
EULEX’s collaboration with the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IFM) has led to the exhumation and identification of numerous remains. However, challenges persist, including the deliberate concealment of bodies in clandestine graves and cemeteries, complicating the identification process.
The mission emphasizes the importance of information exchange among all relevant parties to make progress in resolving the fates of the missing. EULEX continues to support local authorities in their efforts to provide answers to the families of the missing.
While significant strides have been made, the search for missing journalists and others continues, underscoring the need for sustained international cooperation and commitment to uncovering the truth.
