An Ecuadorian journalist was shot after being lured to a location by a false news tip, in an incident that has intensified concerns about targeted violence against media workers amid the country’s worsening security crisis.
José Vinces Oviedo, a journalist based in the southern border city of Huaquillas, was attacked on March 18, 2026, after receiving information about a supposed discovery at a local cemetery. Acting on the tip, he went to the site to report, where two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on him.
Vinces was struck in the stomach during the attack but survived. He later stated that a microphone he was carrying helped reduce the impact of the गोली, and he was treated and released from a local clinic shortly afterward.
Authorities believe the journalist was deliberately deceived into going to the location, with police indicating that the tip about human remains in the cemetery was fabricated to lure him into a vulnerable position. A cemetery worker was also reportedly injured in the shooting.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for a swift and thorough investigation, urging Ecuadorian authorities to determine whether the attack was directly linked to Vinces’ reporting. The journalist is known for covering crime and local corruption through his outlet, Vince’s TV, and has been a vocal critic of local officials.
The attack comes against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in security across Ecuador, particularly in border regions like Huaquillas, where criminal organizations have expanded their influence. Journalists reporting on organized crime and corruption are increasingly exposed to threats, violence, and targeted attacks.
Press freedom advocates warn that the use of a false news tip as a lure represents a calculated escalation in tactics used to target journalists. By exploiting the professional duties of reporters, attackers are able to manipulate them into dangerous situations, increasing the likelihood of harm.
The case underscores the growing risks faced by journalists in Ecuador, where violence against the press has risen in recent years. Advocacy groups emphasize that without effective protection measures and accountability, such attacks may continue to threaten independent reporting and further erode press freedom in the country.
