Israeli forces carried out a series of dawn raids across the occupied West Bank on January 5, 2026, detaining dozens of Palestinians, including a journalist and a 15-year-old boy, as part of intensified security operations in the territory, multiple local sources reported. The raids spanned several governorates, reflecting an ongoing campaign of arrests that has persisted since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza war.
Among those taken into custody was journalist Inas Ikhlawi, who was reportedly arrested at her home in Idhna near Hebron without any formal charges immediately disclosed. Separately, a 15-year-old identified as Yazan al-Aloul was detained in Nur Shams camp near Tulkarm, underscoring the broad demographic sweep of the operation. Additional detentions were reported in Bethlehem’s Aida refugee camp, where more than 25 Palestinians were held during extensive house searches accompanied by intimidation and property disturbance. Arrests also took place in Qalqilya, Ramallah, and Tubas governorates.
The intense raid campaign continued a pattern of military incursions and arrests in the West Bank that intensified after the war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023. Palestinian monitoring groups report that over 21,000 Palestinians have been arrested in the West Bank over the past two years, with around 9,250 still in detention. This figure includes hundreds of children and women, many held without formal charges under renewable administrative detention orders that allow indefinite confinement. Rights organisations have criticised the practice as violating due process and harming detainees’ rights.
Human rights advocates have highlighted patterns of alleged mistreatment linked to arrest operations, reporting cases of torture, denial of medical care, solitary confinement, and other abuses against broader Palestinian detainee populations. These claims contribute to ongoing international scrutiny of Israeli security practices in the West Bank and their impacts on civilian life. Critics argue that frequent raids and detention campaigns foster a climate of fear and restrict freedom of movement and expression for communities under occupation.
The arrest of a journalist during the latest round of raids has drawn particular attention from press freedom groups, who note that media workers in the West Bank and Gaza have been increasingly targeted in security operations over the past years. The detentions coincide with broader tensions and recurring confrontations in the territory, making the safety of civilians and noncombatants an ongoing concern for local and international observers.
