Recent Israeli airstrikes on the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis on August 25, 2025, have resulted in a devastating loss of life, claiming at least 20 people—including five journalists from major international outlets—and drawing widespread condemnation.
The attack unfolded in a “double‑tap” fashion: the first strike hit the hospital, and just moments later, as rescuers and media personnel responded, a second strike followed. This tactic reportedly targeted rescue efforts and the press covering the aftermath.
Among those killed were five journalists: Hussam al‑Masri (Reuters), Mariam Abu Dagga (AP freelance visual journalist), Mohammed Salama (Al Jazeera), Moaz Abu Taha, and Ahmed Abu Aziz. Photographer Hatem Khaled (Reuters) sustained injuries.
Mariam Dagga, aged 33, was a respected storyteller known for her compelling visual reporting on Gaza’s conflict, particularly the suffering of children. Her death has been mourned deeply by colleagues and family.
The Israeli government, through the Prime Minister and the military, expressed regret for what it termed a “tragic mishap” and emphasized that Israel does not intentionally target journalists or medical personnel. An official military investigation has been promised.
Globally, the attack triggered a wave of outrage. Press freedom organizations, journalists’ unions, and numerous governments demanded accountability. Al Jazeera decried the deaths as part of a systematic campaign to silence journalists—and called the strike a war crime.
This tragedy adds to an alarming tally of media casualties in Gaza. Since October 2023, over 240 journalists and media workers have been killed amid the Israel–Hamas conflict—making it the deadliest conflict for journalists in recent history.
