Turkish Airstrike Kills Syrian Kurdish Journalist Near Tishrin Dam
February 16, 2025February 16, 2025 – Syria –
The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) has issued a strong call for the global community to end its silence over repeated attacks on journalists in the region. This appeal comes in the wake of the recent killing of Kurdish journalist Egîd Roj (also known as Şervan Sîdo), who was killed in a Turkish drone strike near the Tishrin Dam. This tragic event marks the third attack on journalists in Northeast Syria since December 2024.
DAANES condemned the Turkish state and allied forces for targeting media professionals, labeling these actions as blatant violations of international laws designed to protect journalists in conflict zones. The administration emphasized that these attacks aim to suppress independent reporting and intimidate those who seek to uncover the truth amid ongoing regional conflict.
The press department urged international human rights organizations, media freedom groups, and other relevant bodies to break their silence and take decisive action. The calls include demands for holding accountable those responsible for these attacks and for stronger measures to ensure the safety of journalists operating in the volatile environment of Northeast Syria.
Despite the grave dangers, journalists in the region remain steadfast in their commitment to report facts and bear witness to the realities of the conflict. DAANES highlighted that journalists view their work not only as a professional duty but as a national and humanitarian responsibility, making their safety and freedom critical to upholding democratic principles and human rights.
The recent spate of targeted killings has heightened concerns about press freedom in conflict zones, with international watchdogs warning about the chilling effect such violence has on independent journalism. The attacks are perceived as part of a broader pattern of attempts to silence dissenting voices and restrict the flow of information.
DAANES’s statement underscores the urgent need for the international community to step up and ensure the protection of journalists, safeguarding the vital role they play in providing accurate, unbiased information from war-torn regions.
