Bob Katter’s Fiery Outburst: ‘Answer to Jesus’ or Parliamentary Fallout?
September 2, 2025September 02, 2025 – Indonesia –
In the wake of widespread protests across Indonesia, press freedom is facing heightened threats amid growing civil unrest. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned assaults and intimidation targeting at least 16 journalists covering the demonstrations, calling on President Prabowo Subianto to ensure accountability—especially when law enforcement officers are implicated—and to guarantee thorough, independent investigations. Among those affected, Antara photojournalist Bayu Pratama was reportedly attacked by police outside the Parliament in Jakarta, underscoring the perilous conditions for media personnel.
These events unfold against the backdrop of a nationwide wave of protests that began on 25 August 2025. Citizens—led by students, labor groups, and motorcycle taxi drivers—gathered to decry a proposed hike in parliamentary allowances, rising living costs, and government fiscal policies seen as favoring the elite.
Amid escalating tensions, President Prabowo has taken a firm stance. After visiting victims of the unrest in an east Jakarta hospital, he asserted he “will not retreat even a step,” denouncing the violence as orchestrated by “rioters, not protesters,” and pledging public backing based on this distinction.
Casualties from the clashes include at least four fatalities and dozens of injuries. Over 43 individuals, both civilians and law enforcement officers, have been treated in hospitals, with several still receiving medical care. In response to public outrage, political parties have agreed to revoke perks and overseas allowances for lawmakers, signaling a nod to protesters’ demands.
