The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has issued an urgent appeal to Hong Kong authorities to drop all charges against 77‑year‑old publisher Jimmy Lai and release him immediately and unconditionally as his national security trial enters its final phase.
Lai is facing serious charges—sedition and collusion with foreign forces—which, if upheld, could result in a life sentence. His trial, which began in December 2023 and was originally expected to last 30 days, has extended to nearly 150 days due to repeated delays.
CPJ highlighted Lai’s deteriorating health after nearly five years in solitary confinement in a maximum‑security prison, warning that the risk of his dying behind bars grows each day. CPJ’s Regional Director, Beh Lih Yi, stressed that the world is watching how Hong Kong treats its journalists, warning that such prolonged imprisonment tarnishes Hong Kong’s reputation as a free, open, and business‑friendly society.
CPJ also supports international efforts to amplify Lai’s case, including letters to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging him to meet with Lai’s son Sebastien, a request that remains unfulfilled despite being raised more than two years ago.
