The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on U.S. congressional leaders to protect the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) following President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at dismantling the agency. USAGM oversees critical media outlets, including Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), and Radio Free Asia (RFA), which provide uncensored news in regions with restricted press freedom.
The executive order led to the suspension of over 1,300 VOA employees, including journalists, and the termination of funding for RFE/RL and RFA. This move has raised concerns about the loss of independent journalism that challenges authoritarian narratives globally. CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna described the action as “outrageous,” emphasizing the importance of these agencies in promoting press freedom.
In response, CPJ joined legal efforts to defend the editorial independence of USAGM-affiliated outlets, filing amicus briefs asserting that the executive order undermines the agencies’ missions and the safety of their journalists. The organization also urged Congress to take immediate action to protect journalists affiliated with USAGM outlets from deportation, as many face threats in their home countries due to their reporting on politically sensitive issues.
The Trump administration’s actions have drawn criticism from international figures and organizations, who fear that such measures could embolden authoritarian regimes worldwide. CPJ continues to advocate for the restoration of support for USAGM and its affiliated outlets to ensure the continuation of independent journalism that serves global audiences
