The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has formally called on Israeli authorities to “immediately and unconditionally” free the journalists detained during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The flotilla was intercepted on October 1 and 2, and CPJ says at least 32 press workers were among those arrested.
CPJ condemned the move as a breach of international maritime law and labeled it a dangerous escalation in Israel’s pattern of targeting media professionals. “Detaining members of the press while reporting on a humanitarian mission is a clear violation of international maritime law,” said Sara Qudah, CPJ’s regional director, urging global leaders to pressure Israel to reverse its actions.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) also denounced the arrests, expressing strong condemnation of the “illegal arrest” of more than 20 journalists aboard the flotilla. RSF insisted that such detentions are serious violations of the public’s right to access information and called for the immediate release of those detained.
Meanwhile, ARTICLE 19, a global freedom of expression organization, voiced serious concern for the safety of journalists and activists aboard the fleet, warning that their detention infringes on fundamental rights.
According to media reports, the fleets involved carried press personnel from around the world. Arab News reported that at least 32 journalists were on board several of the 39 vessels en route to Gaza. The CPJ and allied groups characterized the detentions as part of a broader pattern in which Israel risks silencing or stifling coverage of the Gaza crisis.
Critics argue that targeting journalists on such missions not only violates protections guaranteed under international law but also obstructs transparency and accountability in conflict zones. The move has galvanized calls from press freedom advocates and international organizations for diplomatic intervention and accountability measures.
