China’s top legislator has commended journalists for their reporting on the country’s annual legislative meetings, highlighting the role of media coverage in informing the public about key political developments.
Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), met with journalists in Beijing who had reported on the fourth session of the 14th NPC, China’s national legislature. During the meeting, Zhao expressed appreciation for the work carried out by domestic media outlets and reporters covering the annual parliamentary gathering.
The NPC session, one of China’s most important political events, took place from March 5 to March 12 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The meeting forms part of the country’s annual “Two Sessions,” which brings together lawmakers and political advisors to discuss legislation, economic priorities, and national policy directions for the year ahead.
According to officials, Zhao praised journalists for producing organized and comprehensive coverage of the session. He noted that media reporting helped present the work of the NPC and the functioning of China’s legislative system to a wider audience, both domestically and internationally. The reports, he said, highlighted the role of the people’s congress system and communicated key messages about national development and governance.
The meeting with journalists followed the conclusion of the annual session, during which lawmakers reviewed major policy documents and legislative proposals, including plans related to economic and social development. The gathering also addressed priorities linked to China’s next five-year development strategy and other legislative initiatives presented for deliberation during the session.
Zhao encouraged media organizations to continue reporting on the work of the people’s congress system and to explore additional stories related to legislative activities and the responsibilities of NPC deputies. He emphasized that journalism plays an important role in communicating the work of the legislature and ensuring that citizens remain informed about national governance.
Chinese officials frequently meet with journalists following major political events as a way of acknowledging the role of the media in disseminating information about government proceedings. The annual NPC meeting typically attracts coverage from a wide range of Chinese and international media outlets, with reporters attending press conferences, legislative debates, and policy briefings throughout the session.
Observers say such events illustrate how China’s political leadership seeks to highlight the importance of media coverage in shaping public understanding of national policies and legislative developments. The latest meeting with journalists underscored the government’s recognition of media contributions in communicating the outcomes and priorities discussed during the country’s annual legislative gathering.
