On April 4, 2025, Indonesian journalist Situr Wijaya, 33, was found dead in his hotel room at D’Paragon Hotel in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta. Known as the founder and editor-in-chief of the online news outlet iN Sulteng, Situr’s sudden death has raised serious concerns among press freedom advocates and his family, who suspect foul play.
According to initial reports, Situr’s body showed signs of bruising on his face and chest, along with injuries to his lips. These visible marks of trauma led his family to file a police report at the Jakarta Metro Police under Article 338 of the Indonesian Penal Code, which pertains to murder. They argue that the physical evidence suggests he may have been subjected to violence before his death.
However, the Jakarta Police released preliminary autopsy results stating that Situr died due to a lung infection, likely linked to tuberculosis. They noted that several medications found in his hotel room supported the possibility that he was undergoing treatment for the disease. His family confirmed he had been receiving treatment for tuberculosis, but they remain unconvinced that the infection alone explains the injuries observed on his body. They continue to call for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Situr’s passing has drawn national attention, particularly in light of recent deaths involving journalists in Indonesia, including the cases of Juwita in South Kalimantan and Rico Sempurna Pasaribu in North Sumatra. Press freedom groups such as the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) have urged authorities to thoroughly explore whether Situr’s death was connected to his journalistic activities.
Southeast Sulawesi Governor Anwar Hafid expressed condolences and assisted in the repatriation of Situr’s remains to his hometown in Sigi Regency. He was laid to rest on April 6.
As investigations continue, Situr Wijaya’s death remains under scrutiny. His family, colleagues, and media watchdogs are demanding transparency and justice to ensure the case is not prematurely closed without all questions answered. The incident adds to a growing concern about the safety of journalists in Indonesia.
