June 11, 2025On October 16, 2022, at around 7:10 p.m. in Montelíbano, Colombia, journalist Rafael Emiro Moreno Garavito was fatally shot while closing his bar and grill. Two men arrived on a motorcycle, and one entered the restaurant wearing a baseball cap. The assailant drew a revolver and fired three shots, killing Moreno instantly. Known for his reporting on corruption and organized crime, Moreno had faced threats before his death. The attack shocked the community, and as of now, the assassin remains unidentified and at large, according to FLIP and local reports.
Rafael Moreno’s last words/work: “If you have to kill me, kill me. But I am telling you to your face: you won’t silence me.”

Proof of Targeting the Journalist: The CVS investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by Moreno. he had provided the agency with evidence collected during visits to sites along Ure, where he filmed excavator machines digging gravel from the riverbed and loading it into dump trucks. “There are four or five diggers working day and night. It’s a disaster,” Moreno said on the phone to Forbidden Stories in early October 2022. “They are doing irreparable damage to the basis, which is part of our region’s cultural and natural heritage”. Just days after that phone call, Moreno was dead.
Reason for Killing: Moreno has made reporting on corruption and drug trafficking his specialty. An obsession, even. Voces de Cordoba, launched in 2018, spared no one from local politicians to mining companies to paramilitary groups. Sometimes bordering on the excessive, Moreno’s tone and the rising number of followers on his page – about 56,000 did not go unnoticed.
Progress of the Case: Still in Progress
